This white paper describes the performance difference among NFS, SMB, and iSCSI network storage protocols when running FIO workloads in a KVM environment. Abstract iSCSI, NFS, and SMB protocols provide access to storage resources via a TCP/IP network. While iSCSI provides block device access, NFS and SMB are file-level access protocols.
To facilitate his block layer work in the Linux kernel, Axboe created the flexible IO tester (fio) benchmarking and workload simulation tool. fio is able to simulate various types of I/O loads, such as synchronous, asynchronous, mmap, etc., as well as specifying the number of threads or processes, read vs. write mix, and various other parameters. fio was used to set the record in December 2012 for the highest number of I/Os-per-second (IOPS) in a single system.

fio is an I/O tool meant to be used both for benchmark and stress/hardware verification. It has support for 19 different types of I/O engines (sync, mmap, libaio, posixaio, SG v3, splice, null, network, syslet, guasi, solarisaio, and more), I/O priorities (for newer Linux kernels), rate I/O, forked or threaded jobs, and much more.
